Live Before We Die
EXPOSITION!
Had a great time at New York Comic Con this past weekend! I met some great artists and brilliant webcomics. Here are a couple of my favorites...
- JL8: http://www.jl8comic.tumblr.com - a funny, endearing webcomic about what would
happen if Superman, Batman, and a host of other superheroes from the DC Universe
went to elementary school together.
- hashtag the planet: http://www.hashtagtheplanet.com - a sweet, single-panel emo
webcomic. At times clever, at times funny, at times heart-breaking, but always smart and
with lots & lots of heart.
Check them out!
The weekend was filled with meeting designers, artists, authors, and creative whirlwinds. I even met the writer and artist of my favorite comic growing up, Young Justice: Peter David and Todd Nauck. I remember that comic as the first I followed from beginning to end. I grew up with those heroes. So, to meet the creative forces behind the comic was a pretty big deal for me. Peter David was a fountain of knowledge & humor, and Todd Nauck was a true gentleman. But, I must say, the best person I met was Todd's wife, Dawn. Bubbly, kind-beyond-all-measure, and with a love for her husband I have not seen since Singin' in the Rain, Dawn was my favorite part of the Con, by far.
Thanks to every person I met, every friend I went with, every panel I attended (including the Firefly 10th anniversary special with Sean Maher, Jewel Staite, and one Nathan Fillion), and every cosplayer I took a photo of for making this one great Con. I'm already counting down the days until next year...

Look Who's Evil Now
TRICK OR TREAT!!!
Thanks all for waiting a day for the comic to come out; MUCH has happened (including a few auditions, an appointment, and New York Comic Con starting). I hope you like the strip.
New York Comic Con starts TODAY! I'm so excited. Got a 4-day pass and all my geek gear ready. Gonna hobnob with the nerd elite! And pass out anti-perspirant. I'm doing a public service.
Tonight is the kick-off concert with Ben Folds Five! Fingers crossed I get in. Fingers crossed I don't die from excitement after seeing them.
NEXT WEEK: Who's evil NOW?!?!?! (probably more of the kids, I would say...)
Lates!
-[jimmy]
P.S. If you DO like this strip, or a part of it, or the whole comic for that matter, please retweet or share links to the site through your facebook or blog. I'd love to share [harbor] with as many people as I can, and you're a big part in making that happen & keeping the family growing. So, if you haven't yet tweeted, posted, or facebooked the comic, please do so! And if you have: thanks.

When She Smiles
GRR!!
I really like how this one came out. And not just because Dee's costume is a 19th century gentleman.
NEXT WEEK: Is Lee an actual zombie? If so, what's going to happen to Dee? Really, WHY doesn't Lee have a costume on? Some of these questions will be answered! Perhaps.

It's a Business
Supply and Demand!
Getting back in the swing of things now that September is here. Is it just me or does Summer feel like a pause in one's actual life? "I'm doing this but once Summer ends I'll be back to my old routine." Or what-have-you. That's how it's felt for me, at least.
Fall is my favorite. Fall flavors, fall leaves, and fall clothing. I like sweaters; I don't like sweating.
Keep on keeping on!

COMMISSION!
Summer's over (though nobody decided to tell New York; two words: MUG. GY!) I'm definitely ready to get back into the swing of things. Plus, Fall is my favorite season.
Last week I got to see people I don't see on a normal basis. I was very glad I got the chance to.

So You Wanted To See The Wizard
FRIENDS!
Nothing new on this front. Just waiting for November so I can start my Christmas show in Pennsylvania. Yup! Doing a Christmas show in Lancaster, PA with the Dutch Apple, an amazing dinner theatre. It's called Swingin' Christmas and they asked me to bring my tap shoes, so you know I'm excited for it.
Oh! I love my family. And my friends. And my family made up of friends.
This concludes the mushy, sappy portion of our blog.
See you next week!

Nice Work If You Can Get It
Benefits!
So, yesterday I performed at my first ever stand-up open mic at Cha Cha's in Little Italy. It was fun and a little less daunting when I finally got up there; the terror is in the anticipation, right? A lot of good comics were out there: some new, some veterans, all trying to work out their material. I told jokes about pet owners, Batman, kids, and having a lot of energy. The crowd was welcoming and supportive. Got a few laughs, a couple of loud guffaws, and a lot of positive feedback. I've been wanting to try stand-up for a long time; out of all the art mediums it's the one I fear the most, and so I'm glad I finally fought that fear and tried it. I certainly think I'll be trying my hand at some more stand-up in the weeks, months, and years to come.
And maybe I have a video of my first-ever open mic. And maybe I'll post it on YouTube soon. Maybe.
Thanks all for your wonderful thoughts, love, and good vibes for yesterday. They made all the difference.
Lates,
-[jimmy]
P.S. I met another stand-up gentleman, who I believe is 54. First, he thought I was 22 instead of 27 (thank you, sir!); second, when I told him this was my first time he said something to me that took me completely by surprise. He said, "That's great that you're starting young." ...What? I know of comics who started at 22, 21, even 18. I thought I had started running way past the gunshot. But he had started at 50 and showed no illwill or remorse towards the fact. His one comment made me realize that youth, time, success: they're all relative.
Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now. See you next week.

Blood in the Water
Hey!
So, I took a break for my birthday last week, as you probably noticed. Thanks again to everyone who made the day so wonderful.
Saharava, the show I'm in at the NY Fringe Festival, is going great! Two more shows: tonight and next Friday. Dancing, singing, tarot: who could ask for anything more?
Next Week: Jimmy shops around DL's Oasis.

It's August! And you know what that means: Autumn is just around the corner. Thank GOODNESS! 'Cause if I have to hang out with summer for very much longer we are more than likely going to get into a fight! Summer can just be plain not nice sometimes.

Don't Worry 'Bout Me
Sometimes I can't put things into words. Sometimes, words just fail to express how much a person has meant to you, or how much you've learned from him, or how you know that if you turn to be at least half the kind, intelligent, fun, strong, patient person that he is than you'll turn out okay. Sometimes words aren't enough, especially when you're talking about your father. Or, in this case, my father.
Happy birthday, Dad. Words are worthless when it comes to how much you mean to me and how much I love you.

Had a great time this past Monday night at the NYMF opening night party. Met so many great and talented artists. If you're in New York and are a fan of new musical theatre works, check out a show or two or all thirty. Definitely check out The Groove Factory.
I have some good news, but I don't know if I can tell it just yet. But soon. Soon...

America
Boom! Fireworks! Meat Products!
Not only is today the day of our independence (and of grilled stuff), but it's also my cousin Adam's birthday. Perhaps the coolest, kindest person I know, Adam has always been there for his family with a funny joke or helping hand. And now he's going to be there for his country, as he's joining the Navy very soon. I couldn't be more proud that I can call him family.
So, here's to Adam.
Happy Birthday, man. Those fireworks are for you.
Happy 4th,

It Sucks to Be Me
Two years ago today, or two years ago tomorrow, or maybe even yesterday -- I'm not good at keeping track of things. But still, two years ago -- I moved to New York.
When talking about moving, everyone says it's been a "crazy ride", and that's because, for the most part, it's true. If you want a crazy, bonkers, biggest-leap-of-your-life, continuous-mix-of-elation-and-fear, beautifully-insane journey: New York's your place. If you want security, try Idaho.
(Note: I've never been to Idaho.)
Things are still a struggle, and I'm pretty sure they'll be for awhile, but that's okay. Because I can't believe the sights I've seen. I can't believe the people I've met. I can't believe the experiences I've had. And sometimes, on rare, rare occasions, I wonder if I made the right choice to move here. But then I see a show, or walk through the park, or take a class, and I'm reminded all over again why, as someone very wise once told me (i.e. my father), I'm exactly where I need to be.
So, here's to two more years of struggling. Heck, here's to twenty, if that's how long it takes. Here's to more years of exuberance and tears and laughter and worth. Because I'm here for the journey. And I'm here for good.

King of the World
Done and done.
This week feels like it's dragged on forever! I don't think I have much on my plate right now, but it seems I have the busiest schedule that any past incarnation of me has ever had.
But that's good. That's why I'm here.
One of the more fun things on my plate this week was finally attending the NY Actors Tweetup. This is a gathering of actors, writers, directors, and general creative-types to leave the digital screen and come together every-so-often for drinks, conversation, and fun. Hosted by the wonderful Erin Cronican (@erincronican) and lovely Marissa Mutascio (@marissamutascio) - follow them! - I had more fun than is legally allowed. If you're in the area, check it out. If you're not, find one near you (I know there's an LA one...) I certainly can't wait for the next tweetup.
How do you like the new names? Tweet @harborcomic your thoughts. Follow the comic, too, if you like. You know, no big deal... we'll probably follow you back... whatevs...
#cryforattention
Next Week: The 100th comic! How will we celebrate? (If Lee has her way, probably with glitter.)
See you then!

Different Names for the Same Thing
Ta-Da!!!
So, there ya go. From now on I'll be using these names for the characters. Hopefully that'll arise all new HILARIOUS situations! But probably not.
Already know you're going to have trouble remembering who's who now? I'll post a link to this comic for easy reference soon. So, never.
And, yes, the title is not from a musical. It's just incredibly apt, so I had to use it.

I'm Not Finished Yet
Comic!
So, the comic will continue. I got a lot of actual concern from friends and family about whether the comic was actually ending. Which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to know that you'd be sad to see it go. I sometimes think I'm drawing this just for me, so it's nice to hear from you all. Thanks!

Man
Boom.
Man, oh man, do I enjoy drawing human Michael. I have got to find a way to bring him back. Maybe something where he drinks a potion and turns back. Or a machine, like when Urkel turned into Stefan. More to come, I assure.
We're drawing closer to the end of Jimmy's search for the perfect comic. And maybe, just maybe, he'll find that what he's been searching for has been inside him all along. Like Dorothy. Or Avatar.

That Terrific Rainbow
YAY!!!
I don't know if I like this new-fangled, post-modern, dystopian-future layout that Blogger has saddled me with now. Does anyone else have a blogspot? What do you think? What I think is I can't find anything; the save button, the button to make things bold, nothing! What I also think is that last sentence just confirmed in me that I am too old to adapt to new technology. Get off my digital porch, you young programming whippersnappers!
We're getting closer and closer to the 100th comic. What will that bring? Fireworks? I hope not. Those things are expensive.
Next Week: We see what it would be like if the gang were animals.

Real Life
Boom!
Spring is here in New York. Probably everywhere in the U.S., but still: work with me. Actually, it's been so warm you might even call it early Summer. Might. Again, work with me.
So, if you don't know already, [harbor] has moved to Wednesday nights, just to allow me to try and get them out on a regular basis. Hope this helps your hump day!
What do you think of the new comic? Is this the change [harbor] needs? Does it need any changes at all? Why is Jimmy still listening to Erin? Some things will forever remain a mystery.
Next Week: Jimmy tries another approach.

Hope you had a wonderful Easter. Or are continuing to enjoy Passover.
I had a good one, myself. While I did miss my family, I spent some time in Central Park and some time in Brooklyn, which aren't terrible places to spend the day.

Let's Face the Music and Dance
This week has been...INSANE! Auditions, call backs, more call backs, singing, dancing, acting even! It's been a great welcome back to the world of New York auditioning.
Thanks to everyone's kind words of encouragement! Means a lot.
Unfortunately, since the week is already about to end, I don't believe I can get another [harbor] up by Monday. But, if a new one isn't up next week, then it definitely will be up by the week after. Bear with me: March is a crazy month.
Thanks,

Make Up Your Mind
Things are kind of quiet now. Back to the New York grind.
But, things are about to heat up [harbor]-wise. Next month is our two-year anniversary! And in a few months the 100th strip will be posted! Big things are happening, so in celebration...
Some things will change.
Some will stay the same.
And one [harbor] member will die!
Just kidding! No one's dying. But, expect big surprises and fun stories in the coming months.
Next Week: We celebrate two years! Better show up before we run out of dip.

Aftershocks
Uh oh!
First weekend of Pirates of Penzance at the Cohoes Music Hall went wonderfully! Second and last weekend starts on Thursday; if you're in the area, get your tickets now.
A quick nod to the wonderful cast and crew of Urinetown at the Ghent Playhouse. Although it closed last week, I still feel very fortunate to have worked with such amazing people. If you didn't get to see it I kinda feel sorry for you. Kinda.
Tomorrow's Valentine's Day. To those of you with "special someone's" I hope you have a romantically romantic evening. And to us "lesser" folks: just because we don't have that certain someone (just yet) doesn't mean we can't use tomorrow to show our friends and family that we love them. Let's make everyone feel special. So to everyone that reads this: you're the most special group of people imaginable; you make my dreams come alive every Monday. I love you for that.
Valentine's Day: not just for lovers anymore.
Next Week: Jimmy and the boyfriend stand off in a battle royale of epic proportions! Don't put your money on Jimmy.

A Really Lousy Day in the Universe
Comic!
As Pirates draws nearer and nearer to opening, I must say it's going very well. We have a full week before tech and we're already going into full runs. How awesome is that!?
In other news, there's only one more week of Urinetown, the show I choreographed. If you're in the area, check it out. You won't be disappointed. Tickets and info at www.ghentplayhouse.com
Next Week: Love is in the air! Plus the return of the mystery girl!

More from these two "frenemies" in the coming months.
Good news! I'm going back to Cohoes Music Hall in a week to a production of The Pirates of Penzance. Very excited to return. Do not worry, however, as [harbor] will continue to update throughout the 5 weeks I am there. "How?" you ask? Why, through the magic of technology. That's how.
I just realized that in this show I'll play a pirate and in the last show I played a cowboy. Now, all I need is an astronaut and my six-year old "what-do-you-want-to-be-when-you-grow-up" trifecta will be complete!
